We're back! During out hiatus we've kept busy and even added some pretty awesome new technology to our studio. Every once in a while we find ourselves window shopping on the internet and, oh look, what's that shiny thing in my search results, with all the pretty blinking LEDS. Omg, IT TAKES PHOTOS. And just like that, we've added a 3DR Solo Drone to our gear. So obviously it's not like we haven't had years to play around with them and have always seen the potential of adding it to our studio. But the cost/value/ease-of-use for these haven't really made it worth it, until now. The 3DR Solo is truly a smart drone that is completely modular and mounts GoPro cameras which I much prefer for the versatility. I went out to see how well it could lock a position and keep a straight path in some heavy winds for a sunrise shoot at Asbury Park while up in NJ. Simply put, AMAZING.
It took a few sessions to get used to the controls, which really weren't that hard to get the hang of. Photos are much simpler to work with since you fly to a position and shoot. Video was simple as well for the basic shots but became tad bit more intricate for more dynamic shots since you're simultaneously flying the machine while moving the camera. Overall not hard, but it does take practice to get confident.
